Florida A&M University puts dental school on hold.
After more than 18 months of successfully rallying for a new dental school, Florida A&M University has withdrawn its request before the Board of Governors. However, the FAMU President James H Ammons has not given up hope of one day launching a college of dental medicine. He has decided to wait until the economy has turned around. In the meantime, FAMU is proposing it be allowed to partner with the University of Florida, which is the only public institution in the state with a dental school.
FAMU is asking the Board of Governors to approve adding 12 FAMU students to UF’s entering class, establishing a pipeline for minority students pursuing a career in oral health with the goal that they would practice in rural and under-served areas.
