Acidity in sour candy bad for kids dental health
The end of Halloween (a day for many of candy collecting) does not mean a end to all the candy and sweat a child may have. With more Holidays yet to come and any the extra candy that may still be stashed from Halloween trick or treating, it is important to make sure your child dental health care is not being forgotten.
A parent does not have to say no to every sweet treat that comes this time a year but it is good to know that some candy may be worse then others. Many kids love the sweat and sours candies, however the truth is they are more sours for your child dental health then sweet.
Sour candies have a much lower PH and a lower PH causes the decalcification or the going away of the tooth enamel. Sour candies will soften teeth and can lead to enamel erosion and diminished tooth size. Citric acid is the worst acid for your teeth. Try to minimize the effects of consuming highly acidic foods by eating other food with them or by chewing xylitol-containing gum, like Ice Breakers, Trident, or Orbit.
